Getting one digit in her sort code wrong and mistakenly entering 'eight' instead of 'seven' left a woman from Hereford without £1,000 for close to nine months after money meant for her savings account ended up in a bank account of bookmaker William Hill instead.

Jane, 60, who did not wish to give her surname, emailed This is Money at the end of April after her bank TSB were originally unable to recover the money, after it received no response to its recall request.

Her £1,000 was finally found and returned to her on last month after we got involved in her case, but only after four-and-a-half months as we were passed between TSB and NatWest, the bank of the British high street bookmaker.

Each told us that we needed to speak to the other bank, but the money was eventually found in a 'collection account', one of the hundreds of accounts William Hill holds with NatWest, the details of which were actually provided to the bank by TSB earlier this year.

TSB had also provided NatWest with the account number and sort code of Jane's bank account from which she had sent the £1,000, meant for her savings account with Newbury Building Society, which was one of the pieces of information This is Money gave to NatWest to finally help her recover her money in September.

NatWest had previously told us in July it could not find the money in any of William Hill's accounts and the details given to it did not match any account held by the bookmaker.

Jane originally tried to recover the £1,000 herself, obtaining the details for the account to which the money was sent by accident in what is often described as a 'fat finger payment'. The sort code of her Newbury account ended '74' but she accidentally entered '84'.

Meanwhile the account number consisted of eight zeroes. Jane said this was because she would input her 10-digit Newbury account number as a payment reference when sending money. This unusual sequence is why NatWest were initially unable to find the payment.

In a letter from TSB on 16 March, a week before the UK went into lockdown due to the coronavirus, the bank said the beneficiary of the money was a 'Mr William Hill' and the address a street in North London which was the spot of a branch of the bookmakers.

An email from Newbury Building Society in mid-March also confirmed the details matched a NatWest 'collection account'.

She contacted William Hill in mid-April, but was told after checking its main NatWest account that it couldn't find the money, and that the betting shop in North London had been closed since 20 March due to the coronavirus, after she asked if there was a manager she could call.

She contacted This is Money a week later, who for months were unable to help resolve her situation.

NatWest initially told us in May the refund request needed to be made via TSB, which Jane had already tried, but later told us two months' later a search of William Hill's accounts had failed to turn up the money.

It said the sort code belonged to a NatWest collection account but it could not find out which one based on the details provided, but the account was not one belonging to the bookmaker.

But when Jane went back to TSB, it was told on 10 August by NatWest that 'the payment had been made to an account held by William Hill' after all, contradicting what it had told This is Money only a few weeks earlier.

TSB said they could not take any further steps to recover the money themselves.

This is Money contacted NatWest again in August to ask about this contradiction in what it had said, after which we were told the bank may be able to identify the payment after all.

We were asked for Jane's TSB account details, which were given to the bank when TSB originally tried to recover the money eight months beforehand.

It turned out that Jane had accidentally sent £1,000 to one of the hundreds of collection accounts William Hill holds with NatWest, possibly one used to hold the takings of the betting shop in North London she was given the address for in March.

The fact the bookmaker held hundreds of accounts with the bank, along with the account number consisting of all zeroes, is what led to the problems in trying to recover her money, NatWest said, with the situation being described as trying to find a needle in a haystack.

The money was eventually discovered and sent back to Jane on 18 September, nearly nine months after she had made the £1,000 transfer and four-and-a-half after This is Money first contacted NatWest about it.

The bank said in a statement: 'We have apologised unreservedly to Jane for the inconvenience she experienced as we attempted to retrieve her money.

'The complexity of this case made it challenging for us to locate and verify the initial payment, however having done so, we have now ensured Jane has been refunded in full.'

TSB said in a statement: 'We are pleased that the customer's money has now been returned by NatWest, which we requested as soon as the customer reported the mistake.'
