Looking for a trustworthy resource explaining pontoon rules and a winning strategy? Then you’ve landed on the right page.

Pontoon is, in many ways, very similar to blackjack. In fact, it’s a relative of blackjack. Like blackjack; the fact that Pontoon is such an easy game to understand makes it very popular in both offline and online casinos the world over. Let’s look at Pontoon rules first.

Pontoon Rules – What You Need to Know

Pontoon Rules GentingRules

As with most card games, rules vary depending on which (online or offline) casino you play in. The simple objective is to hit 21 or get as close to that number as possible.

All cards are of the same value as in blackjack. Therefore an ‘ace’ can be 1 or 11. Tens, jacks, queens and kings are all valued at 10. Pontoon rules is one thing, but you also need to understand hand ranks.

Pontoon Hand Ranks:

Pontoon: Same as Blackjack is hitting 21 with 2 cards; an ace and any other card valued at 10.

  • A five-card trick; collecting 5 cards in your hand without exceeding a total of 21.
  • A hand of less than 21 with four of fewer cards. i.e. 7d, 8s, 3h equals 18.
  • A busted hand; 22 points or more.
  • As with blackjack, both the player and the dealer start the game with 2 cards; however, both of the dealer’s cards are FACE DOWN.
  • The player has to hit (take another card) if his/her hand is valued at 14 or lower.
  • The dealer must hit soft 17 to qualify.
  • Splitting is allowed if the player is dealt with two cards which are the same (a pair). The player can only split twice meaning a maximum of three hands for a single player is possible during one game.
  • A player can double once (increase the size of their bet by that equal to the initial wager) at any time.
  • A player can hit after doubling if desired.

The Payout for Pontoon

  1. Hitting Pontoon pays 2:1 so a $10 wager brings in a $20 win (plus your wager back).
  2. A five-card trick pays 2:1 as well. But the dealer beats you if he also produces a 5 card trick.
  3. All other payouts are at even money but again, the dealer wins if the hand value is equal – bummer!

Pontoon Strategy

Below is a table for the basic Pontoon strategy to use when playing Pontoon at an online casino. The numbers on the left are the hand value and along the top how many cards the player is holding. You can also learn how to win at blackjack here.

Boats WILL be cruised at 3/4 throttle, not full throttle. Not only is this better for the engine, but outboard engines at full throttle are going to use a lot more gas, for very little extra speed. And yes, YOU pay for the gas!
BALANCE the passengers on the boat so it does not list to one side or ride bow down in the water. To many people in the bow converts the pontoon into a submarine, and that is never good!
You MUST have a fully charged cell phone on board and keep it turned on. We recommend you bring a zip lock bag as cell phones and salt water are not friends.
No towing of any boat for any reason.
No skiing, tubing or towing of persons in the water.
No diving or jumping off boats while in motion, as tempting as it may seem at the time.
No bow riding - all passengers MUST remain inside the railings while the boat is in motion, it's the law.
No fires or grilling on boats - you may bring a grill to cook out on the island.
No mooring at other docks, unless prior permission is obtained and noted on your contract.

Children 6 and under must wear a life jacket at all times while on the boat - it's the LAW! We provide USCG approved lifejackets for children and infants of all sizes.
Stay between channel markers at all times while in a marked channel. Remember: RED, RIGHT, RETURN.
Obey No Wake Zones at all times. The designated No Wake Zone is from our docks to the last house in the channel as well as 200 feet away from any anchored vessel or island beach.
You are responsible for your boat, motor, equipment and passengers. You break it, you bought it! See our list of charges for any items lost or broken. And nope, we do not offer insurance.
When trimming up the engine, do NOT allow the propeller to come out of the water when the engine is on. You loose steering and damage the engine. We'll have a field day with your credit card!

Stay at least one mile from the mainland shoreline except when inside a marked channel.
When a larger boat approaches you in the channel be aware that their wake could flood your boat, SLOW DOWN.
Stay away from Styrofoam balls and other buoys - these are crab traps that can rip up your propeller. And don't even THINK about retrieving those crabs - that carries a $5000 fine in the State of Florida!
If a storm comes in, call for instructions. Then make sure the boat is anchored solidly at the island and take shelter under the bimini. DO NOT attempt to return to dock during a storm.
DO NOT beach the boat. Drop a stern (back) anchor first, then set a front anchor ensuring that the boat is floating at all times. As the tide drops, move the boat out. If the boat is beached on an outgoing tide you will be charged $250 as we have to pick you up and leave a staff member to guard the boat for 10 hours until the tide comes in.
When dropping an anchor, yank on it first to make sure it is set - the grass flats in our area can sometimes jam up an anchor so it just skids and does not set properly the first time.
Rinse the mud off anchors before stowing them on board.
